Why Your DIY Website Isn’t Being Found on Google
If your Squarespace website isn’t showing up on Google, or you’ve searched your business name and found nothing, you’re not alone. Many coaches, wellness practitioners, and creative business owners build beautiful DIY websites on platforms like Squarespace, WordPress, Wix, or Showit—but still struggle with low traffic and no visibility.
In most cases, the issue isn’t your design—it’s your SEO (Search Engine Optimization).
In this post, I’ll walk you through the most common reasons DIY websites don’t rank well in search results—and how to fix them. These are the same foundational SEO strategies I teach in my SEO Starter Kit, created specifically for service-based business owners who want to get found online without hiring a full SEO team.
Before we dive in, I also recommend checking out:
Now let’s get into the top 5 reasons your site isn’t ranking—and how to start fixing it.
1. Your site hasn’t been indexed by Google
This is the first thing I check when a client tells me, “I can’t find my site on Google.”
Here’s how to check:
Go to Google and type:
site:yourdomain.com
(Replace with your actual domain name.)
If nothing comes up, your site hasn’t been indexed yet—meaning Google doesn’t even know it exists.
How to fix it: Submit your site through Google Search Console. It’s free and straightforward, and you can use the URL inspection tool to request indexing for each important page.
2. You’re not using the right keywords
This is one of the biggest missed opportunities I see—especially on homepage and service pages.
Most people write from the heart, which is beautiful—but forget to include the actual search terms potential clients are typing into Google.
For example:
If you’re a therapist in Austin, and your homepage headline says “Let’s Begin Your Healing Journey,” Google has no clue what you do or where you are. A better headline might be:
“Therapy for Anxiety & Stress | Austin, TX”
Not sure what your ideal clients are searching for?
In this SEO Starter Kit, I walk you through how to find high-impact keywords using free tools—and how to apply them to your site, even if you’re not techy.
3. Your meta titles and descriptions are blank (or auto-generated)
Meta titles and descriptions are what show up in Google search results—and they’re a major signal for both search engines and people.
Many website platforms will auto-fill these with your business name or page title, which isn’t enough to get noticed.
How to fix it:
Manually write a meta title and meta description for every main page on your site. Keep the title under 60 characters and the description under 155.

4. You’re not blogging (or your posts aren’t optimized)
Blogging is still one of the best long-term strategies to get traffic from Google—especially for solo business owners. But it only works when your posts are optimized with the right keywords, structure, and content.
Tip:
Write posts that answer common questions your audience is already Googling. Think “How to reduce stress naturally” or “Best yoga poses for energy.”
If you’re stuck on what to write, I include a list of SEO blog prompts and templates inside the SEO Starter Kit.
5. Your homepage doesn’t have clear structure or H1 headings
Google scans your website like a human does—but it pays extra attention to structure. If your homepage doesn’t have a clear H1 heading, subheadings, or organized sections, it’s harder for Google to figure out what your page is about.
Fix this by:
Using one strong H1 heading per page
Including keywords in your headings
Structuring your homepage like a story: Who you help → What you offer → Why it works → How to book
